This article is about Larry Crane the guitarist.
Larry Crane (born Oct 8, 1956) is an American rock musician and songwriter from Seymour, IN. From 1976 until 1991, he appeared along side John Mellencamp as a guitarist, co-songwriter, and contributor to the arrangements and production of the Mellencamp sound (often labelled as "heartland rock.")[1] Although not overtly credited as a co-writer, Crane contributed to twenty "Billboard Charted" singles, including "Ain't Even Done With The Night," "Hurt So Good," "Jack and Diane," "Hand to Hold on To," "I Need a Lover," "Crumblin' Down," "Pink Houses," "Rain on the Scarecrow," "Small Town," "Lonely Ol' Night," "Rumbleseat," "R.O.C.K in the U.S.A.," "Paper in Fire," "Check It Out," "Cherry Bomb," "Martha Say," "Jackie Brown," and "Pop Singer." Crane did, however, receive a co-writer credit for the un-charted, fan favorite, "Play Guitar," which appears on the Uh-Huh album--named amoung the 100 Best Albums of the Eighties.[2]
After the release of John Mellencamp's Big Daddy recording, Larry Crane left the band that Rolling Stone magazine called "one of the most powerful and versatile live bands ever assembled."[3] Crane's departure was due to his impression that "he and his band mates were underpaid."[4] Since leaving the band, Crane has launched a solo career. During his thirty-plus year career, he has also toured and recorded with several influential musicians, including John Prine, Steve Earle, Bonnie Raitt, Rosanne Cash, Carl Perkins, James McMurtry, Mitch Ryder, Lou Reed, and John Fogerty. He has also collaborated with legendary producer, Bob Johnston.
Because they both work in the music industry, Larry Crane is often confused with Larry Crane the recording engineer.
